Basie's photo says it all- she is joy in motion. This happy, happy hound is in love with life, eager for every new day, ready for any adventure, excited about each new minute. It is impossible not to smile when you are in her presence. What makes her sunny disposition and absolute confidence even more remarkable, is the fact that one of her legs was rendered nearly useless when she was hit by a car. Her elbow was fractured and did not heal properly, but somebody forgot to tell Basie that she has a disability. This girl is as able-bodied as the best of them- able to run, wrestle, leap and snatch the bread from the counter top just as fast as your best 4-legged dog! Basie is housetrained and crate trained and will do best in a home with a canine companion close to her size or larger (she is rough on the little ones!) and with someone who has the time and patience to train her. Her exuberant nature can lead to mischief, so she needs supervision and boundaries. When Basie's long days of joyful play are complete, she turns into the best snuggler anyone could ever ask for and she sleeps quietly all through the night. Betty loves to go on walks. We have gone on hour+ walks and she has no problems keeping up. She may be a senior dog; but she still has energy and strength. She has been to the beach and camping in the mountains with us.
In the house, Betty is calm. She is content to just lie down near her people.
Betty didn't know commands when she first came to us; but she has proven that you can teach old dogs new tricks. She's extremely food motivated so teaching her is fairly easy.

He is solid white except a ring of blue merle coloring on his rear end (thus the name) and 2. He is completely deaf. Bullseye was born without hearing and doesn't know he is missing anything. Carlos is a happy, happy dog who lives for human affection. Carlos generally throws himself down for a belly rub within an instant of meeting a new friend and then begs for more. Chiquito came to us after a disk rupture left him paralyzed in his back end and unable to walk. He had already perfected his "scooting skills" and can zoom around the house like nobody's business using those powerhouse front legs, but now he is truly mobile. Chiquito loves getting into his chair and going for walks outside to explore the world. He goes everywhere as fast as possible and with the most determined (and comical) look on his face you have ever seen. Katrina is a real sweet-heart who obviously had a loving family before coming to LDCRF. She responds to “sit” and “come” and is food motivated and intelligent, so very trainable. She stays home nicely by herself with free reign of the house, but also does fairly well in a crate. She enjoys walks, her duck toy and playing tug-of-war. Katrina is a bit of a diva and will find the softest possible place to curl up for a nap. She is not a big barker so far, except to say hello to the neighborhood dogs and act as a canine doorbell. Katrina would probably do best with older children because she tends to lick her humans a lot and give soft nibbles when she is excited. She also has a pretty high prey drive, so a home with small animals might not be a good fit. Katrina likes to climb, so she would do better with a wood fence, rather than chain link. November is the month we set aside in the U.S. to give thanks for our blessings. Most people count their cats among their blessings, and in many cases, senior cats. While there is something very special about raising and caring for a young cat through its senior years, it takes a really special person to intentionally seek out and adopt a senior cat and give him or her a loving, caring home for the remainder of its life. These cats sometimes come with medical conditions requiring regular extra care and expensive medications. They are often not as playful or cute as younger cats and kittens. However, they simply can't be matched for devotion, unconditional love, and warm companionship.
Senior cats are perfect companions for older people who find it difficult to keep up with the antics of kittens. Older cats as housemates help fill in the void of loneliness and provide measurable benefits in lowering blood pressure and stress relief.
For many years, the ASPCA and Petfinder.com have worked together to sponsor November is the Adopt a Senior Pet Month.
